Shortly after Everett’s birth his mother (Emma Coppock) died from birth complications. At that time Everett’s father, Charles Benjamin Pugh was working for Charles Greer Brewer. Charles B. Pugh was left alone with an older son (Henry Pugh) and daughter (Lillie I. Pugh) and a new born baby (Everett).
Charles
B. Pugh decided to leave New Mexico and the employment of Charles G.
Brewer, take his two older children and move to Oregon. The Brewer’s
were more than happy to keep the infant, Charles
Everett Pugh as Charles B. Pugh did not think he could handle the
responsibility of caring for a new born baby.
