Brewer Ranch 1884 - 1900

The Charles Brewer family arrived in New Mexico Territory the summer of 1884. They had traveled from Yam Penn, New York, all the way to New Mexico, by wagon. Charles soon found the160 acres he wanted homestead. This land was about 9 miles south of Aztec and just east of Bloomfield.

Charles immediately began making the improvements necessary to receive the land patent, a home was built, crops planted and plans to buy cattle made.

  In February 1887 Rio Arribo County lost land to the formation of San Juan county, At this time the Brewer ranch's new address became San Juan County.

Crops under the Model Ditch are in flourishing condition large fields of corn interspersed with ripened grain and stubble and the darker green alfalfa are seen from Bloomfield to Largo. Among those deserving mention are Cornelius Sullivan, D. F. Daniels, C. G. Brewer, J. R. Curles, Jose Armenta and J. B. Valdez. The most corn grown in San Juan county and that means a good deal will deal will be found along this ditch, the young orchards only two to four years old are looking well and in another year will add their numbers to the fruit output of the county.  - The weekly New Mexican Review 24 August 1893

Note C. G. and Truman sold 320 acres, at this time I have only located 160 acres owned by C. G.. Perhaps the other 160 acres was owned by Truman.


The 1885 Territorial Census for Rio Arriba shows Wilson S. and his wife Ella Kutz Dalton as farming in the are. It is not know if the two families came to the area together or one family arrived before the other.
